  • Q:

For the membrane replacement, can I replace the methyl chloroform with other solvents? The methyl chloroform is so expensive and hard to buy. Thanks!
Asked on 2/19/2014 by John from Blacksburg, VA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The only solvent recommended that has been verified to work is the methyl chloroform solvent. Other solvents may work but that would be up to you to determine and we would not be responsible for damage that may occur to the membrane. This would be at your own risk if you decide to test other solvents to soften the membrane.

  • Q:

What does the "Membrane Service Kit" include? Does it include the methyl chloroform solvent mentioned in the instruction? Is the methyl chloroform solvent equal to 1,1,1-Trichloroethane? I am wondering whether the "1,1,1-Trichloroethane in DMSO" is OK for this membrane replacement process. Thanks!
Asked on 2/12/2014 by John from Blacksburg, VA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

This kit contains: 3x 19mm membranes, o-rings, and 125mL fill solution. It does not include methyl chloroform solvent that is recommended to soften the silicone tubing, which is also not included.

  • Q:

What's the difference between 1-mil and 2-mil PTFE membranes (EW-05643-50 and EW-05643-51). How to decide which one should I buy? Thanks!
Asked on 2/6/2014 by John from Blacksburg, VA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The 1mm is going to have a faster response, but will be a little more fragile than the 2mm version. 2mm membrane is good in a more aggressive fermentation application.

  • Q:

Does this probe need to refill the solution frequently? What kind of Membrane Service Kit do I need for this probe? 1-mil thick PTFE Membranes or 2-mil thick PTFE Membranes? Does this probe need to be refill or change membrane frequently? Thanks!
Asked on 2/6/2014 by John from Blacksburg, VA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The frequency that fill solution will vary depending on use from application to application. You will need to check to make sure the fill solution is filled accordingly. The fill solution is available as 05663-54. Either the 1-mil and 2-mil PTFE membranes can be used.
